百年老店的bullshit

美國的學術出版老店普林斯頓大學出版社 (princeton university press)正值百周年慶典，百年來出版八千部學術著作，紜紜書海中選出以為自豪的第一出版，是一九二二年einstein 的“the meaning of relativity”《相對論的意義》。一九二一年einstein 講學於princeton，其中四堂課的演講，成為此書的主要內容。後來二戰前einstein 給德國追殺，逃亡出歐，終選美國普林斯頓泊店喘定，幾年間即上書美國政府，提出原子彈的概念。直至過世，einstein 亦守在princeton 中。

出版社的另兩本巨著亦是影響世界，一本是chicago school 的經濟學泰斗friedman 佛利民和anna schwartz “the monetary history of the united states, 1867-1960”，今天香港經濟第一信條的“放任資本主義”(laissez-faire capitalism)，佛老可說是倡導者中最主要人物、亦是他老人家獨愛香港之因。

至於另一本著作亦與經濟學及數學相關，是john von neumann 和 oskar morgenstern“the theory of games and economic behavior“。von neumann 實係與愛因斯坦同事於princeton 的institute for advanced study (IAS)，戰時參與 ”manhattan Project“，發展核武。當中尤推其在電腦科學的貢獻，被尊為「電腦之父」。現代電腦中的”self-reproducing machine”，正名反以其名稱為“von neumann machine”,還有merge sort algorithm 也被宣稱為由他發明。（此等東西還是少寫為妙，以免在我一班老朋友和弟弟面前班門弄斧。另、IAS 的教員中還有我們中大的丘成桐。）

百年老店零五年張揚慶祝，看其成就，可稱為世界最高水平的出版社。年初除推出“a century in books : princeton university press 1905-2005”，輯錄百篇上乘文章外，更有趣的破格出了本只得六十七頁的pocket book ，名為“on bullshit”，作者係princeton 榮休的名譽教授harry frankfurt。農曆新年時我曾提及此書，今天於書店偶遇，買來這百年老店的shit。重讀開首的第一句話，一矢中的，道盡了「旁觀者」 (bystander）的「無知的無知」(the ignorance of the ignorance)、「可恥的可恥」。罵人話我倒說悶了，還是在此引教授一話：

“One of the most salient features of our culture is that there is so much bullshit. Everyone knows this. Each of us contributes his share. But we tend to take the situation for granted. Most people are rather confident of their ability to recognize bullshit and to avoid being taken in by it. So the phenomenon has not aroused much deliberate concern, or attracted much sustained inquiry.“
